LAHORE: In a groundbreaking move to transform the livestock sector, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Pakistan’s largest model cattle market at Shahpur Kanjran, Lahore. This state-of-the-art facility sets a new benchmark for livestock trade and animal welfare in the country.
Spread across 74 acres, the Shahpur Kanjran Model Cattle Market is designed to offer a seamless and humane trading environment for livestock traders, farmers, and buyers. It boasts the capacity to accommodate 25,000 large animals and 150,000 small animals, making it the largest cattle market in Pakistan.
Modern facilities for livestock trade
During her visit, CM Maryam Nawaz inspected the fully upgraded infrastructure, including:
- Shaded animal enclosures to protect livestock from heat
- Electric fans inside sheds—a first in Pakistan—to enhance comfort
- A quarantine centre to prevent the spread of contagious diseases
- Veterinary clinics for on-site animal health services
- Auction bays, loading/unloading zones, and a modern slaughterhouse
Supportive amenities for traders
The cattle market also features:
- 20 spacious residential rooms for livestock traders
- A mosque, tuck shop, ATM, and bank for daily needs
- Washrooms and vast parking areas
- A dedicated truck center and police post for security and logistics
These upgrades ensure a comfortable, secure, and efficient experience for both traders and buyers, while also enhancing the welfare of animals during the buying and selling process.
A step forward in livestock sector modernization
This model cattle market represents a major step in modernising livestock trade in Punjab. The government plans to replicate the model across the province, with the second-largest cattle market set for development in Jhang.
