KARACHI: Nyambura Kamau, Kenya’s High Commissioner, has urged the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) to suggest goods that could be exported from Karachi to his country to the Ministry of Commerce so that the proposals could be deliberated upon in the upcoming Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting.
Emphasising the significance of ensuring mutual benefits for Karachi’s business community, the Kenyan High Commissioner underscored the need to broaden trade beyond the conventional tea exports from Kenya and rice imports from Pakistan.
Established under the bilateral trade agreement inked in 1983, the JTC encountered a postponement for its April 2022 session. The Ministry of Commerce has now granted approval for the JTC meeting, pending confirmation from the Kenyan delegation.
Ms Kamau acknowledged Karachi’s pivotal role in representing a substantial share of Pakistan’s commercial interests and stressed the need to forge connections with Karachi’s business community, given its strategic location.
Highlighting the enduring relations between Kenya and Pakistan since 1964, with a focus on trade and investment, the High Commissioner proposed an exchange of more investment opportunities, technology transfer, information sharing, and diversification of exportable products between the two countries.
In a bid to strengthen business ties between the countries, she recommended addressing trade and investment barriers and organising joint business networking events, seminars, exhibitions, and trade fairs.
KCCI President Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh welcomed the Kenyan High Commissioner, underscoring the historical relations between Pakistan and Kenya dating back to the 1960s when the latter played a crucial role in supporting Kenya’s independence from British rule.
