KARACHI: As many as 4,300 shopkeepers and vendors were slapped a total fine of Rs16.1 million 127 shops were sealed and 10 shopkeepers sent to jail for violation for overcharging people buying essential items during the campaign against profiteers launched by the city administration during the last 20 days.
The campaign was launched by the office of Karachi commissioner with the cooperation of traders and representatives of wholesalers and retailers association.
The Market Committee fixes the prices of vegetables and fruits on a daily basis and action is being taken against violators of these price lists on the orders of Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Rajput.
The commissioner says the campaign against the violators would continue directing the officers concerned to ensure its success so that essential commodities are available in all the markets at official prices.
As per district-wise break-up 1007 shopkeepers were fined Rs4.057 million, while three violators were sent to jail and 37 shops were sealed during the campaign in district South.
The administration sealed 49 shops, imposed a fine of Rs0.45 million on 529 shopkeepers and three were sent to jail for overcharging in district Central.
A total fine of Rs1.3 1m was slapped on 853 shopkeepers and 10 shops were sealed in district Malir.
Similarly, in district Korangi, 543 profiteers were fined Rs2.5m, while three violators were sent to jail and 14 shops were sealed during the anti-profiteering drive.
