ISLAMABAD: Pakistan needs to boost its exports and reduce imports by focusing on the IT sector, promoting entrepreneurship, and a startup culture for the sustainable and inclusive growth of the country, says Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani.
He was addressing the two-day All Pakistan Chambers Presidents Conference organized by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) at a local hotel, attended by over 70 presidents from various chambers across the country, ambassadors of friendly nations, and numerous business leaders.
Gillani underscored the principle of placing the right people in the right jobs, saying that the government’s role should be that of a regulator rather than a participant in business activities.
He elaborated on the economic challenges facing the country and noted positive indicators emerging due to government efforts. He said political stability was crucial for improving the business environment.
Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal stressed the importance of collective efforts by stakeholders to navigate the current economic challenges. He emphasized the continuity of policies and maintaining law and order as essential elements for economic stability.
Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the role of the business community as a major stakeholder in the economy. He urged the government to consult with the business community on economic decisions to ensure sustainable development.
Bakhtawari also highlighted the significance of regional trade for the country’s progress and proposed posting business leaders as trade counselors in foreign missions to boost economic diplomacy. He mentioned upcoming ICCI projects such as an Expo Centre and an Industrial Zone to promote business and economic growth.
Various other speakers, including former provincial minister S. M. Tanvir, President of FPCCI Atif Ikram Shaikh, Chairman of the Founder Group Khalid Iqbal Malik, and former president of ICCI Zafar Bakhtawari, emphasized different aspects of economic development and the role of the business community in overcoming economic challenges.
The conference was also addressed by the President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashif Anwar, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, as well as other distinguished participants.
Senior Vice President of ICCI Faad Waheed and Vice President Eng. Azhar ul Islam also contributed valuable insights during different sessions of the conference.
