ISLAMABAD: Gohar Ejaz, Minister of Commerce, Industries, and Production, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to combat smuggling and ensure that trade adheres strictly to legal channels.
He made these remarks while presiding over a meeting with prominent retailers from across Pakistan, aimed at strategising to bolster the retail sector and enhance the nation’s exports.
The minister emphasized that the collaborative efforts between the government and retailers exemplify a shared dedication to achieving economic growth and prosperity for the nation.
During the meeting, retailers expressed their eagerness to contribute to Pakistan’s export industry and underscored the pivotal role they can play in expanding the nation’s footprint in global markets.
Dr Ejaz acknowledged the significant role retailers play in the economy and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide optimal opportunities for them to export their products and extend their presence in the domestic market.
In response to the recent restrictions imposed by the UAE, the minister assured the retailers of continued support for meat exports to the Gulf states via sea routes. To facilitate international market access, he pledged to create avenues for retailers to enter Central Asian Republics (CARs) and other global markets and also outlined plans for exhibitions that would enable local retailers to collaborate with international designers and brands, fostering innovation and growth in the sector.
Recognising the growing importance of e-commerce, retailers advocated for increased government support in this thriving industry. The minister acknowledged the potential of e-commerce and committed to working closely with retailers to harness its future prospects effectively.
The meeting also witnessed a constructive exchange of ideas regarding the expansion of the tax net. Dr Ejaz emphasized the critical role of tax compliance in achieving prosperity, asserting that it is the sole pathway to economic well-being.
Furthermore, he encouraged local manufacturers to transition towards achieving one hundred percent local manufacturing, reducing dependence on imported materials, and boosting domestic production.
The minister urged retailers to aim for higher export volumes and assured them of the government’s steadfast support in this regard. He also asked brand manufacturers to improve labour conditions and provide their workers training through PITAC (Pakistan Industrial Technical Assistance Centre).
