ALYTUS: A recent inspection by the local State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) at Riamona UAB, a meat processing company in the Alytus district in Lithuania, has resulted in the suspension of the company’s operations and the disposal of over four tons of products after the environmental samples of fresh poultry meat tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, besides detection of other irregularities.
During the inspection conducted in May that resulted in significant enhancements to food safety standards several critical issues were identified, prompting immediate action from authorities to ensure consumer safety.
One of the key findings was the discovery of sausages mislabeled as products of Riamona UAB, though they were manufactured by another company. This deceptive practice has been rectified to ensure transparency and accuracy in product labeling.
The inspection also revealed that some meat products did not meet quality standards due to the use of mechanically separated meat. In response, Riamona UAB is now implementing stringent quality control measures to maintain the highest standards in its products.
It also highlighted hygiene and sanitation issues within the facility. Inspectors found unhygienic conditions in food preparation areas, including malfunctioning sinks and inadequate personal hygiene practices among employees.
These findings have led to the implementation of rigorous cleanliness protocols and employee training initiatives to ensure a sterile production environment.
Similar inspections have been conducted at other food establishments across Lithuania, demonstrating the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the integrity of the food supply chain.
While challenges remain, including recent reports of food-borne illnesses and hygiene issues at other establishments, authorities are actively addressing these concerns through comprehensive inspections and enforcement actions.
These efforts reflect a collective commitment to upholding the highest standards of food safety and protecting consumers across Lithuania. Through continued collaboration between regulatory agencies and food industry stakeholders, significant progress is being made to create a safer and more transparent food environment for all.
