In a gesture of appreciation for the resilience shown by Minnesota’s dairy industry in the face of recent challenges, including the detection of H5N1 avian influenza in a Benton County dairy herd, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, alongside Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen, visited Gar-Lin Dairy near Eyota recently to commend the dedication of dairy farmers across the state during Dairy Month.
While acknowledging the impact of H5N1, Flanagan reassured Minnesotans that dairy products remain safe for consumption, emphasizing the state’s proactive approach to managing the situation, expressing confidence in overcoming these challenges alongside farmers.
Gar-Lin Dairy, operated by the Allen family, exemplifies Minnesota’s agricultural strength with 1,750 milking Holstein cows and a diverse crop operation spanning over 4,100 acres.
The visit highlighted not only the dairy’s economic contribution but also its role in fostering agricultural innovation and sustainability.
“We’re proud of our dairy farmers,” Flanagan remarked, underscoring their essential role in the state’s economy and culture. She also recognized the interconnectedness of dairy farming with other agricultural sectors, such as corn production, highlighting their collaborative efforts for a stronger agricultural community.
Amid discussions about biosecurity measures against influenza, Commissioner Petersen stressed the importance of vigilance and collaboration among dairy farmers and veterinary professionals. He encouraged farmers to monitor their herds closely and report any symptoms promptly to mitigate risks.
He assured the dairy farmers that the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Board of Animal Health continue to monitor developments closely, providing updates and guidelines as necessary to safeguard animal health and maintain dairy production standards.
