KARACHI: Karachiites will now have to pay Rs220 for a liter of milk as its price in the city has increased by Rs20, following an agreement between dairy farmers, wholesalers, and administration.
This adjustment comes after dairy farmers initially demanded a farm rate of Rs250 per litre and a retail price of Rs297 per litre during a lengthy meeting with Commissioner Karachi.
The commissioner met with the representatives of the dairy farmers, wholesalers, and retailers to discuss the price adjustment.
Following rigorous discussions, it was mutually agreed to implement the Rs20 per litre increase. According to an official notification, the retail price of milk has been fixed at Rs220 per litre. The wholesale and dairy farmer prices of milk have been set at Rs205 and Rs195 per litre, respectively.
As per the agreement, dairy farmers will sell milk at the official price, and non-compliance will result in legal action.
To ensure compliance, the commissioner has obtained affidavits from dairy farmers, wholesalers, and retailers, committing strict adherence to the new prices.
Under the agreement, the official rates will be prominently displayed at all milk shops, and wholesalers are required to issue invoices to retailers based on sales price and quantity, ensuring transparency and quality control.
The stakeholders have assured the commissioner that there will be no further demands for a price increase until December 31, 2024. They have also pledged their cooperation with the administration to enforce the new official milk prices.
