KARACHI: Altaf Shakoor, Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed profound concerns over the rising unemployment rate in Pakistan, urging a substantial shift in the country’s economic policies.
Stressing the need for policies focused on job creation to elevate millions of families from poverty, he criticised both democratic and dictatorial governments for favoring the elite class at the expense of the majority struggling in poverty.
He particularly pointed to the flawed taxation system, which, in his view, protects the wealthy while imposing heavier taxes on the working class.
According to Shakoor, the industrial and agricultural sectors hold a huge potential for generating job opportunities. However, he contends that the government is prioritising the interests of importers, despite Pakistan’s agricultural richness.
Shakoor proposed the construction of new dams, canals, and the adoption of water-saving technologies such as drip irrigation to transform Pakistan into a grain-producing nation.
PDP chief also scrutinised the education system, attributing it as the primary cause of increasing joblessness. He advocated for the implementation of shorter, job-oriented diploma programmes, especially in fields like medicine, engineering, law, accounting, and management, as a remedy to the unemployment crisis.
