HYDERABAD: Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam PhD scholar Syed Taimoor Shah, from the Department of Agricultural Education, Extension & Short Courses recently presented his final PhD thesis on the training needs analysis for intermediaries in the apple value chain in Balochistan at a seminar.
The seminar was presided over by SAU Vice Chancellor Dr. Fateh Marri, who emphasized the significance of the apple value chain.
In his presentation, Shah said 11 Balochistan districts are major apple producers. Of these, his research focused on six districts, revealing that they produce some of the best commercial apple varieties.
Shah suggested that targeted training in supply chain management, value chain optimization, shelf-life extension, and export strategies could greatly benefit both farmers and the province.
Dr Marri praised Shah’s research for identifying a crucial gap in agricultural practices—the training needs of those involved in the apple value chain, saying itcould enhance apple production and marketing in Balochistan and offer valuable insights into the potential for apple cultivation in Sindh.
Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Social Sciences, Dr. Aijaz Ali Khooharo, said the research identifies key training deficiencies and proposes strategies to improve the apple value chain in Balochistan. He pointed out that this work could support economic growth and strengthen the local economy.
Prof. Dr. Badar Nassem from Arid Agriculture University, who served as the external reviewer, discussed the potential to enhance apple production and marketing in Balochistan’s apple-growing regions. He stressed the importance of using these opportunities to boost regional agricultural output.
Dr. Muhammad Ismail Kumbhar, Director of University Advancement and Financial Assistance, stressed the need for targeted interventions to promote apple production and marketing in Balochistan and explored the potential for expanding apple cultivation into Sindh.
The seminar was attended by faculty members, students, and researchers, having a keen interest in advancements in apple value chain management and the future prospects of apple cultivation in Sindh.
