KARACHI: The Poultry Shopkeepers, Retailers, and Wholesalers Association in Karachi announced a shutter-down strike in protest against what they deemed as “unnecessary fines and arrests.”
The wholesalers ceased the supply of chicken to vendors in the metropolis, causing a complete shutter-down strike among retailers in the market until their demands were addressed.
Expressing outrage, the spokesperson for the poultry association criticized the administration for issuing a rate list without considering ground facts and figures, creating obstacles for poultry vendors.
The poultry associations in Sindh and Balochistan urged the administration to release the official daily price of chicken, saying that chicken cannot be sold at a uniform rate. Last month, a similar strike was called by the poultry association in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, protesting against uniform chicken rates in Punjab.
In response to the strike, poultry vendors in the twin cities halted chicken supplies, and the wholesale market in Mandi Bagh Sardaran is currently observing a complete shutter-down strike until the local administration addresses the demands of the poultry association.
