LAHORE: The Punjab government has set an ambitious target to cultivate wheat across 16.5 million acres in the province, mandating wheat cultivation on all government-owned agricultural lands.
At a recent meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman at the Civil Secretariat, officials reviewed the cultivation targets. The meeting was attended by the agriculture secretary, Lahore commissioner, and deputy commissioner, with other divisional commissioners and district officials joining via video link.
The agriculture department has set specific acreage goals across Punjab’s divisions: Rawalpindi (1.49 million acres), Sargodha (1.74 million acres), Faisalabad (1.88 million acres), Gujrat (1.25 million acres), Gujranwala (1.15 million acres), Lahore (1.33 million acres), Sahiwal (0.92 million acres), Multan (1.82 million acres), Bahawalpur (2.61 million acres), and Dera Ghazi Khan (2.29 million acres).
The CS directed DCs to provide full support to farmers in meeting these targets, emphasising the agriculture department’s role in offering technical guidance and resources He instructed agricultural officers to focus exclusively on achieving these targets during the sowing campaign.
In a detailed briefing on the wheat sowing campaign scheduled from 1st to 30th November, the agriculture secretary said provincial, divisional, district, and tehsil-level committees have been established to monitor the drive’s progress.
He said farmers will have access to essential agricultural inputs through interest-free loans, available via registered dealers across the province through the Kissan Card scheme.
