Pakistan set to boost US Soybean imports in 2025 amid rising poultry feed demand

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is poised to dramatically increase its soybean imports from the United States in 2025, marking a pivotal shift in agricultural trade between the two countries. This strategic move comes as Pakistan’s poultry industry faces surging demand for high-protein feed ingredients.

In what is being described as one of the largest single purchases in recent years, Pakistan has agreed to import 225,000 tonnes of US soybeans, with shipments scheduled to begin from September 1, 2025. This marks the biggest transaction since October 2022, when Pakistan implemented restrictions on genetically modified (GM) soybeans, significantly curbing imports.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), this is the second-largest soybean deal between the two nations. The only larger transaction occurred in June 2022, when Pakistan bought 297,000 tonnes.

🌱 Rising Demand from Poultry Sector

The purchase is largely driven by Pakistan’s growing poultry industry, which heavily relies on soybean meal as a primary source of protein in feed. Industry experts note that easing regulatory restrictions and securing stable supply chains are critical for maintaining livestock productivity and food security in the country.

šŸŒ Trade Tensions & Tariff Talks

Interestingly, this trade boost comes amid ongoing trade tensions, as a 29% reciprocal tariff imposed by the United States on Pakistani imports remains in effect. Despite this, both countries are actively negotiating a new bilateral trade agreement, which could lead to lower tariffs and smoother agricultural exchanges in the future.

Analysts suggest that the recent soybean deal could be a positive signal in broader US-Pakistan trade relations, particularly in agriculture, where demand-driven imports from Pakistan are likely to rise if regulatory and tariff barriers continue to ease.
