LAHORE- A seminar was organized by Punjab’s Livestock and Dairy Development Department, in order to create awareness regarding the act of preservation of sacrificial animals’ hides during Eid-ul-Azha, for promotion of our leather industry.

Provincial Minister for Livestock and Dairy Development, Mian Nauman Kabeer expressed his views by stating that Pakistan’s leather industry is the second largest export sector, after the textile industry. He mentioned that currently, this sector was sharing almost $980 million yearly volume. He believes that this industry also has the potential to multiply this volume of exports with a noticeable amount of improvement in quality and diversification, further benefitting the economy of Pakistan.

Furthermore, the Minister added that Pakistan was one of the leading countries in leather technology, our quality being second to Italy, in the world. In this context and to continue upholding this industry, it was necessary that the public should be informed about saving and preserving the sacrificial animals’ skins on scientific grounds, because of which, the Livestock Department has initiated a roadmap to educate people engaged with this business and the animal farmers.

Pakistan Tanneries Association’s (PTA) office-bearers also spoke at the seminar and informed the participants about the actual worth of sacrificial animals’ skin and that how its real value deteriorates by every passing hour, eventually becoming useless, if not immediately preserved by applying salt on it.

Provincial Minister, Mian Nauman also discussed the affiliation of millions with this industry, and that the next generations should also think of joining this sector for a bright future.

Chairman Hide and Skin Improvement, Sub-Committee of Pakistan Tanneries Association (PTA), Mr. Agha Saidaain, Secretary PTA Mr. Fahim Ahmad, Registrar Breeding Authority Dr. Asif Sahi, Additional Director (Livestock) Dr. Zubair Bari, various other representatives of Lahore’s hide and skin market and representatives of welfare and religious organizations were also present at this seminar.
