ISLAMABAD: Kate Somvongsiri, Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s agriculture sector for sustainable growth and economic development.
Accompanied by US Consul General Kristin Hawkins, Ms Somvongsiri visited the Center of Excellence for Olive Research and Training (CEFORT) at the Barani Agriculture Research Institute and the Ghulam Rasul Farm.
The visit highlights the enduring partnership between the US and Pakistan in the agriculture and dairy sectors, and aims to promote collaborations that drive sustainable development and economic prosperity in Pakistan.
During the visit, Ms Somvongsiri stressed the importance of integrating technology and value addition in dairy farming to enhance productivity and sustainability.
She mentioned the ongoing initiatives aimed at improving dairy productivity and farmer incomes through training, connections with microfinance institutions, and breeder associations.
At Ghulam Rasul Farm, Ms Somvongsiri toured the milk pasteurization facility, established with USAID’s support.
Recognizing Pakistan’s position as one of the world’s top milk-producing countries, with a vast livestock herd, she praised the farm’s innovative business practices that ensure sustainability and growth.
In a meeting with Chakwal Deputy Commissioner Qurat-ul-Ain Malik, Ms Somvongsiri reiterated the US Government’s commitment to supporting economic growth and sustainability in Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
