LAHORE: The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences observed World Fisheries Day in collaboration with Feeding Pakistan program (ASA/WISHH/SoyPak) funded by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Many stakeholders from academia, industry, Punjab Fisheries Department and progressive fish farmers attended the events at Ravi Campus, Pattoki.
The day started with fish netting and then Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha led a walk while Pasha Dr Karen L Veverica, Director, E.W Shell Fisheries Center Auburn University USA, R.S.N Janjua Country Rep. (ASA/WISHH/SoyPak), Dean Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife Prof Dr Shafique Ahmed, Chairman Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Dr Noor Khan, RSN Janjua ASA and a large number of students and faculty members were present.
Later guests visited the stalls of fish value added products prepared by students and appreciated their efforts. Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha while addressing the audience highlighted the importance of fish and shared that aquaculture sector is actively developing like other growing sectors in Pakistan.
Mr. R.S.N Janjua gave a brief introduction about the soy-based feed in Pakistan, Project of American Soy bean Association (ASA) funded by USDA. He demonstrated his work by documentary on “Blue Revolution”. Guest speaker Dr Karen L Veverica gave presentation on feed and feeding management in Aquaculture with emphasis on the role of women and highly motivated women to be a part of aquaculture. Junaid Watto from FDB, Mr. Umer Aslam Awan, CEO, Oryza Organics, Mr. Ahmad Usman, a progressive farmer also spoke about the role of commercial fish feed, its impact on fish production and highlighted the importance of the day.
