World Veterinary Day is an annual event that was created and established to promote and highlight the lifesaving work performed by veterinarians around the world. The day was proclaimed in 2000 by the World Veterinary Association and it is celebrated on the last Saturday of April every year.
In 2020, World Veterinary Day will be celebrated on April 25th, usually; there is a specific theme every year. The theme of World Veterinary Day 2020 is “Environmental protection for improving animal and human health.”
Veterinarians, in their role as advocates for animal health and welfare, have a responsibility as well as the opportunity to safeguard our environment for future generations. Their actions can help mitigate the effects of climate change, ensure proper disposal of medicines, and support responsible use of natural resources (e.g. water and feed) necessary in raising livestock.
A vet’s main job is to take care of animals that are sick or injured. Vets take care of all sorts of animals. They examine animals to find out what is wrong and give x-rays and treatment to help them get better. Veterinary professionals do not only provide animal care, but they also perform number of other kinds of tasks and jobs, including conducting research, ensuring the nation’s food supply is safe, and working towards controlling the spread of diseases. These professionals also have to own communications and problem-solving skills because they have to fulfill a number of roles. Veterinarians are involved in the care for companion animals, promoting the health of farm animals, working animals, and exotic animals.
Veterinary professionals are very much needed in every community to care for the pets, livestock and working animals. Veterinarians work towards improving the public health and the health of animals, they research, diagnose and treat diseases and medical conditions in pets and livestock. Some of the most prominent tasks of veterinary professionals include treating wounds, performing surgery, examining animals, testing and vaccinating against diseases, prescribing medications, operating medical equipment, and euthanizing animals.
To every veterinary professional: we hope you enjoy your special day and thank you for everything you do! To vet owners, try to always be on time for your appointments, follow the advice of your vet, and honor them on World Veterinary Day and every day! They are doing their best for your beloved friend.
The earth gives us everything we need to live. It is our home and the home of countless species. Our responsibility is to take care of our environment. The 2020 theme celebrates the participation of veterinary professionals in supporting sustainability and protecting the environment. It is also an opportunity for veterinarians to exchange innovative ideas and learn other approaches to keep raising awareness on how harmful actions towards the environment can affect animals and humans. We want to thank everyone involved in the veterinary world for their dedication and willingness to help animals, even in difficult times.
